Intel postpones decision on European fab

Intel isn’t making good on its promise to decide on building a European fab before the end of this year. CEO Pat Gelsinger hopes to provide details about the new manufacturing location early next year, he said at a press conference announcing the construction of a packaging and test facility in Malaysia.

Initially, Intel plans to establish a 20 billion fab complex on mainland Europe, possibly adding additional modules later. Total investment could amount to around 100 billion dollars over the next decade. According to AFP, the East German Silicon Saxony region near Dresden is the favorite to host the site, which would eventually reach the size of a small city.
