Japan and the Netherlands, natural partners in semicon
The Netherlands and Japan are seeking each other out in semiconductors, photonics, AI and digitization. The relationship has been strong for hundreds of years, but now that the Americans are disrupting world trade, the need for a strategic chip collaboration is growing stronger.
Like the Netherlands, Japan has a unique position in the chip production chain. The two countries are seeking each other out and taking concrete steps to intensify their collaboration, as became apparent during the extensive trade mission with Minister Dirk Beljaarts over the last two weeks in Japan. Bits&Chips accompanied the deep-tech equipment delegation of about 25 people.
The United States has been trying for years to undermine the global chip order. It wants to maintain its leading position at all costs and is trampling through the global semiconductor order like a bull in a china shop. With whatever means necessary, America wants to be self-sufficient when it comes to chips. Politicians and policymakers across the globe have adopted this attitude. Sovereignty has become all the rage.
