New Origin’s planned photonic chip factory at Kennispark in Enschede is “within reach” now that solutions have been found for electricity and water supply. “Over the past few months, we’ve worked closely with partners in the region and made substantial progress. We now have concrete proposals for addressing both electricity and water supply. This progress gives us confidence that New Origin can be realized in Enschede,” says CEO Twan Korthorst of New Origin.

The Twente fab is intended to bridge the gap between photonics research, chip design and industrial-scale production. The facility focuses on silicon nitride (SiN) technology, an integrated photonics ‘flavor’ known for low light loss and broad coverage of the electromagnetic spectrum, including the visible range. The province of Overijssel is co-investing, citing the strategic importance of photonic chip manufacturing for the Netherlands and Europe.
Grid congestion and water scarcity had posed obstacles to the project. Technical details and agreements still need to be finalized.
