Amsterdam invests 1 billion in AI

Knowledge institutions in Amsterdam have joined forces in artificial intelligence. Over the next ten years, they’re investing 1 billion euros in the development of responsible AI technology. The money will be used to set up research programs, attract top scientists and educate students. Participating institutions are the Amsterdam Economic Board, Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, City of Amsterdam, the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Sanquin, University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Amsterdam boasts over three decades of experience in research, education and innovation in the field of AI. The knowledge institutions are focusing on related technological areas: machine learning, hybrid intelligence and explainable AI. At the core of the plan is the need to develop better systems that focus on humans and provide guarantees for responsible application. The three main themes of the coalition’s approach are AI for health, AI for business innovation and AI for citizens.

The coalition has joined leading international initiatives such as Claire and Ellis.
