Calls for national and European research-spending hike
Several Dutch organizations have been urging authorities, both national and European, to increase spending on R&D. FME, the entrepreneurial organization for the tech industry, argues the Netherlands need to spend an additional 1.3 billion euros per year to be able to compete in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, 3D printing, robotics and photonics. Similarly, the European Union should expand its research and innovation budget by cutting agricultural subsidies.
The Kenniscoalitie, made up of entrepreneurial organizations, universities and research institutes, also warned Europe’s investments are falling behind with those made by China and the United States. In a radio interview, CEO Paul de Krom of research institute TNO stated that even the planned budget increase of the EU’s seven year Horizon research program from 77 to 100 billion euros will not be enough. He feels 120 billion euros is required.
