Self-driving minibuses getting to Helmond
As part of the European Fabulos project, autonomous minibuses will be tested in Helmond. If all safety demands are met, they’ll start driving between station Brandevoort and the Automotive Campus. The minibuses will take passengers and mix with other traffic. The test will last three months starting in the autumn of 2020.
During this period, the Fabulos project will be experimenting with autonomous shuttles in five European cities. In spring, the first tests will start in Gjesdal (Norway), Helsinki (Finland) and Tallinn (Estonia). Lamia (Greece) and Helmond will follow later this year. Each city provides its own unique challenges, eg steep hills in Gjesdal, high temperatures in Lamia and an abundance of cyclists in Helmond.
The goal of Fabulos is to accelerate so-called “last-mile solutions” on the European market. Helmond fits that profile, with two-thirds of the city being within one mile of one of the four train stations.
