Synopsys secures ownership of Intrinsic ID

US EDA company Synopsys has announced the acquisition of Intrinsic ID, the cybersecurity specialist with roots and still a major presence in Eindhoven. “The acquisition of Intrinsic ID complements our extensive semiconductor IP portfolio. We look forward to expanding our R&D presence in the Netherlands with Intrinsic ID’s team and establishing a center of excellence in Eindhoven,” comments Joachim Kunkel, general manager of the Solutions Group at Synopsys. The terms of the acquisition haven’t been disclosed.

Philips spinout Intrinsic ID is a pioneer in physical unclonable functions (PUFs) (link in Dutch). PUFs provide an additional level of hardware security by utilizing the inherent uniqueness of each and every chip by leveraging a unique identifier intrinsically present in the silicon. These identifiers extracted from a PUF can’t be cloned, guessed, stolen or shared, and keys don’t remain stored on the system, thus providing a hardware base of trust to validate payment systems, secure connectivity, authenticate sensors and protect sensitive government and military data and systems.
