Nexperia acquires Nowi to enhance its power-management product portfolio
High-volume chip production expert Nexperia has announced the acquisition of the Delft-based startup Nowi. Founded in 2016, Nowi is the maker of a specialized energy-harvesting power management integrated chip (PMIC) that draws energy from ambient sources like light, vibrations, radio waves or temperature gradients to energize low-power applications like smart wearables, remote controls and wireless sensor nodes. By harvesting these ambient sources of energy, the chip offers a sustainable alternative to powering many consumer electronics and cutting back on the use of batteries and the subsequent waste. The manufacturing capacity and capability of Nexperia, as well as its global infrastructure, will ensure that together, Nowi will be able to speed up the production of these solutions, enabling higher volumes and shipping by the end of 2022 and early 2023.
“Nowi represents a strategically important investment because energy harvesting is the perfect complement to our existing power management capabilities,” says Dan Jensen, General Manager Business Group Analog & Logic ICs at Nexperia. “This decision means we can now offer customers a sustainable alternative to battery power for their products, which will be available in the market quickly. The team at Nowi has built a strong foundation on which we’re only looking to build and facilitate the ability to scale – the production side but also the business and the team.”
