Nexperia and Tata Electronics have signed a strategic partnership covering front- and back-end manufacturing and technology development. The companies say the partnership is intended to build a long-term manufacturing partnership that enhances manufacturing flexibility, strengthens supply chain resilience and establishes scalable production pathways to support Nexperia’s future growth while supporting India’s ambition to throw its hat in the semiconductor arena.
The manufacturing collaboration spans wafer fabrication and assembly and test. Nexperia aims to manufacture part of its MOSFET portfolio at Tata Electronics’ 300 mm wafer fab in Dholera, Gujarat, while discrete semiconductor products will be assembled and tested at Tata’s packaging facility in Jagiroad, Assam. Both facilities are currently under construction and represent a total investment of 14 billion dollars.
The announcement comes as Nexperia remains embroiled in a far-reaching conflict with its Chinese ownership. The dispute has essentially resulted in the separation of Nexperia’s European and Chinese operations. The Chinese business has recently announced it is working toward “100 percent domestic production”.
