Eurofiber and Delft Networks have established a dark fiber connection between Delft and Rotterdam to test entanglement-based quantum networking. Dark fiber is installed optical fiber that isn’t carrying ordinary telecom traffic, giving the partners a dedicated connection for their experiments. They plan to use it to test quantum links between on-chip quantum memories at different locations.
The project will examine signal loss, synchronization and the stability of distributing entanglement over an operational fiber route. Eurofiber supplies the infrastructure, while Delft Networks contributes its quantum networking expertise. The partners haven’t reported distributing entanglement over the connection yet.
Delft Networks was spun out of Qutech in 2024 to turn research on quantum networks into deployable technology. The company is led by cofounder Ronald Hanson, a professor at Delft University of Technology.
