Eindhoven city acquires Brainport Industries Campus
The municipality of Eindhoven plans to buy part of the Brainport Industries Campus (BIC). Specifically, the plan involves acquiring BIC 1, the complex that was completed in 2019 and recently reached ‘fully occupied’ status, housing 2,000 employees and 500 students. Current owner Capreon approached the municipality over the summer about a possible sale. Now that negotiations have been completed successfully, the city council still has to approve the acquisition.
The acquisition aims to “strengthen the region’s position as a world leader in innovation, technology and high-tech manufacturing,” according to a press release. The municipality also wants to exert more influence on which organizations settle on the campus – not just large companies but also startups, research and educational institutions, for example.
Eindhoven was already working on plans to expand the BIC. BIC 2 is to be more than twice as big as BIC 1. On the north side of the current campus, space has been cleared for ASML’s expansion.
For now, Eindhoven isn’t planning to acquire High Tech Campus Eindhoven (HTCE) as well. “The owners of HTCE are doing an excellent job and we consider them valuable local partners. There are no plans to take over the campus now,” states Councilor Stijn Steenbakkers of Brainport and Economy.
