The European Commission wants EU member states to immediately start assessing whether the export of four critical technologies poses a danger to the Union as a whole. The examinations should determine whether sharing advanced semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum and biotechnologies could pose a military or economic threat. Although the Commission stresses that “the results nor any follow-up measures can be anticipated at this stage,” it’s understood that eventually EU-wide restrictions could be adopted, similar to those implemented by the US. The collective assessments should be finished by the end of the year.
