European Commission considers ethical AI a competitive advantage

Reading time: 1 minute

Monday, the European Commission put forward a series of AI ethics guidelines for the industry, research institutes and public authorities to review. The recommendations drawn up by a group of experts are to be tested in a pilot project that will start this summer. The Commission is inviting every willing organization to offer feedback on the practicality of the framework.

The guidelines concern hot-button issues such as data ownership, human autonomy and transparency of AI systems, yet also carry an economic dimension. ‘The ethical dimension of AI is not a luxury feature or an add-on. It is only with trust that our society can fully benefit from technologies. Ethical AI is a win-win proposition that can become a competitive advantage for Europe: being a leader of human-centric AI that people can trust,’ said Andrus Ansip, EC Vice-President for the Digital Single Market.

The Commission will endeavor to get like-minded countries like Japan and Singapore on its side. The pilot phase will also involve companies from other countries and international organizations.
