Luxene debuts illuminated road markings with off-road electronics
Dutch startup Luxene has emerged from stealth, launching a novel approach to road safety by replacing passive reflective lines with actively illuminated guidance strips. Addressing shortcomings of similar solutions, the company’s design doesn’t embed any active components in the road, reducing wear and tear and simplifying maintenance. Founders Maarten Tobias, Bas Boggemann and Anne Renkema previously built and exited the 3D display company Dimenco.

Eindhoven-based Luxene says its luminous lines retain the familiar reflective behavior drivers expect but provide continuous visual guidance in all weather conditions – a critical improvement in accident-prone situations. Compared to overhead lighting, the system is claimed to consume 30 percent less energy, cut material waste by up to 80 percent and emit minimal light pollution. The modular components are designed for circularity.
Pilot deployments are scheduled for early 2026 with Dutch municipalities, starting on cycling paths and rural roads. A broader commercial launch is planned for the end of that year, followed by expansion into smart cities, airports and industrial campuses in 2027.
