NXP-VIS joint venture weighs second Singapore fab

Reading time: 1 minute

Visionpower Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (VSMC), the Singapore joint venture between NXP and Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS), has begun evaluating a second wafer fab next to its newly opened facility. Chairman Leuh Fang said capacity at the first fab is fully booked and some customers are asking for more. No investment decision has been made.

VSMC is gathering information on financing, customer demand and the technologies a second fab would support. Fang said the project would remain a venture between NXP and VIS, with no plans to add a third partner. The existing construction team and potentially expandable infrastructure could help VSMC build a second facility.

The first fab has entered risk production and remains on track for volume manufacturing in the first quarter of 2027. VSMC targets capacity of 44,000 12-inch wafers per month by 2029. Fang said waiting too long to decide on a second fab could mean missing demand if the first remains fully loaded.
