The soon-to-be-built Twente-based foundry New Origin has appointed Twan Korthorst as CEO. As his Linkedin profile states, Korthorst has 25 years of experience with the “non-traditional semiconductor micro and nanotechnologies” MEMS, microfluidics and integrated photonics, which is exactly what New Origin will focus on. Korthorst’s previous role was executive director of Photonic Solutions at EDA firm Synopsys.
Spearheaded by the University of Twente and co-founded by local industry, New Origin intends to establish itself as an independent pure-play foundry for silicon nitride (SiN) technology. Initially focused on photonics, the scope will broaden toward systems of chips, combining electronic and photonic chips using advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration techniques. The SiN production line is expected to come online in about two years.
