The management of glasses-free 3D specialist Dimenco has bought back a controlling stake in the Veldhoven company. Kangdexin Composite Material Group (KDX) acquired the Philips technology spin-off in 2015 (link in Dutch), but is now selling the majority of its shares. The Chinese company is going through a tough patch and has chosen to divest the 3D business for the large part, as it’s no longer a core activity. Back in the hands of management, Dimenco says it will be expanding on its own.

KDX’s core business is developing materials, manufacturing methods and equipment for fixing multiple layers on a wide range of substrates. Dimenco’s glasses-free 3D displays looked like a promising application domain. Essentially, these are LCDs that have vertical rectangular lenses glued to them, which can be turned on and off to show 3D and 2D images, respectively. Dimenco is using technology it has licensed from Philips, from which it spun off in 2010 (link in Dutch). It started with a focus on 3D TVs, but it has moved to professional applications, eg in the medical domain.

KDX is keeping a minority stake. It will also continue manufacturing for Dimenco. In its factory in China, it has a high-volume production line that fixes the lenses to the displays.
