The European Union and Japan have agreed to deepen their collaboration on a number of digital technologies, including research on beyond-2nm semiconductors, 5G and 6G, AI and quantum computing. The move was announced on the Digital Partnership Council in Tokyo on Monday, a high-level meeting aimed at mitigating geopolitical uncertainties and boosting competitiveness and economic security. The meeting was the third of its kind, with the first one held in 2023.

“Deepening our work on core technologies to ensure mutual competitiveness is now more important than ever. This strategic partnership holds real economic weight for both the EU and Japan, and I look forward to advancing it,” said Eurocommissioner Henna Virkkunen, executive vice president for tech sovereignty, security and democracy.
