Reports: Arm to start selling its own silicon
Arm is going to compete against its own customers by selling full-on chips rather than IP, the Financial Times and Reuters report. The firm’s CEO Rene Haas will unveil the first in-house developed chip, a server CPU, as early as summer, the FT writes. Meta is said to be Arm’s first major client. Reuters has seen evidence that Arm has been recruiting executives from licensees.
For a long time, the Arm business model revolved around neutrality, serving a wide range of customers, some of which competed with each other. With Haas at the helm, however, the firm has been looking to secure a bigger piece of the semiconductor pie through various tactics. Arm has consistently denied moving into hardware, although Haas has been dropping hints about opportunities prompted by the AI rush.
