ST-GF FDSOI fab paused among market headwinds
Construction of an FDSOI fab owned jointly by STMicroelectronics and Globalfoundries appears to have been put on hold. “The rate and pace of our expansion in Crolles will be in alignment with customer demand and market conditions,” a Globalfoundries spokesperson told Bits&Chips.
Both STMicroelectronics and Globalfoundries offer FDSOI processes in their European fabs. Backed by the French government through the EU Chips Act, the pair announced a 7.5-billion-euro joint venture to move to sub-20nm FDSOI chips in a newly built facility in Crolles, France. No timetable was provided when the deal was finalized in 2023.
The joint venture targets automotive, industrial, IoT and 5G/6G communication infrastructure applications. It’s no secret that these semiconductor markets are experiencing headwinds, as do most industry segments other than AI-related chips.
