TNO launches mass-customization platform for solar films

1 December 2025

Reading time: 1 minute

TNO has unveiled a new production line for flexible solar films, designed to support large-scale yet custom integration of photovoltaics into building materials. The Mass Customization Line enables manufacturers to tailor-make solar film products while benefiting from the cost-efficiency of mass production. It supports various PV technologies and is already prepared for the upcoming generation of perovskite solar cells.

The innovation targets construction sector demand for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), allowing developers to match solar film size, shape and output to specific projects. By simplifying PV integration into facades and rooftops, TNO expects the new line to lower installation costs and reduce reliance on conventional rooftop panels. The system also allows for post-processing steps like shaping and contact placement.

According to TNO, the technology offers a significant opportunity to strengthen the European PV value chain. Local machine builders, material suppliers and construction firms can now participate in the creation of customized solar products with competitive production costs. The project is backed by the SolarNL program, which aims to ramp up Dutch solar manufacturing.
