TSMC has issued a warning to the Trump administration that chip tariffs could derail previously pledged US investments. “New import restrictions could jeopardize current US leadership in the competitive technology industry and create uncertainties for many committed semiconductor capital projects in the US, including TSMC Arizona’s significant investment plan in Phoenix,” the chipmaker writes in a letter to the US Department of Commerce. The DoC had invited companies to comment on potential tariffs on semiconductors.
TSMC announced a 100-billion-dollar investment in Phoenix, intending to build three new fabs, two advanced packaging facilities and an R&D center. “It’s crucial to avoid imposing measures that may impede this onshoring momentum, particularly those that could create uncertainties for TSMC’s substantial investments and plans for ramping up cutting-edge semiconductor production in the United States,” the letter states. “To allow investments such as TSMC Arizona to proceed expeditiously, the Administration should exempt TSMC Arizona and other companies that have already committed to semiconductor manufacturing projects in the United States from tariffs or other import restrictions.
