Begin vorige maand implanteerden respectievelijk Duitse en Italiaanse artsen de twee nieuwe Reveal-hartsensoren van medisch technologiegigant Medtronic bij een patiënt. Het was een mijlpaal voor de ruim 200 werknemers van het Arnhemse Medtronic Subcutaneous Diagnostics and Monitoring (SQDM). Sinds zijn ontstaan in 1956 maakt het bedrijf pacemakers onder de naam Vitatron.
Met de nieuwe sensoren legt de Medtronic-dochter zich voor het eerst toe op implanteerbare sensoren. ’Of liever: insertable sensoren‘, legt R&D-directeur bij Medtronic SQDM Harry Berghuis uit. De apparaatjes ter grootte van een USB-stick zijn namelijk met een eenvoudige ingreep vlak onder de huid in te brengen. Er hoeven geen draden naar het hart getrokken te worden en binnen een kwartier is alles gebeurd. ’Dit soort minimaal invasieve sensoren is onze nieuwe focus‘, zegt Berghuis.
