Morphotonics bags €40M to focus on waveguides for smart glasses

Veldhoven-based Morphotonics has raised more than 40 million euros in a Series B funding round. The company develops large-area nanoimprint lithography platforms. It’s using the fresh capital to scale up its manufacturing technology for waveguides in AI and AR glasses and advanced photonic components, including co-packaged optics.

Waveguides are transparent optical components that are used in smart glasses to project digital images into the wearer’s field of view. Producing them is technically complex and costly. In Morphotonics’ nanoimprint machines, a mold presses micro- and nanostructures into liquid resin, which is then cured with UV light. This allows waveguides to be manufactured precisely, in larger volumes and at lower cost.

With the financing, Morphotonics aims to expand production capacity for its Cypris platform, further develop the technology and grow its engineering team and other departments. Existing investors 3M Ventures, Innovation Industries and BOM participate again. Invest-NL joins as a major new backer. The EIC Fund, Ernij Next and the European Investment Bank are also taking part in the round.
