Nu politici en beleidsmakers hun aandacht hebben gericht op het oplossen van de crisis en de naderende megabezuinigingen schuift het probleem van het immer nijpende bètatekort naar de achtergrond. Daarmee zouden we onszelf wel eens stevig in de vingers kunnen snijden omdat we dan over een paar jaar nog meer banen verliezen, vreest KU Leuven-hoogleraar Georges Gielen. Hij roept op om juist extra te investeren in innovatie en technologieonderwijs. Het vraagt alleen een beetje politieke moed, aldus Gielen.
Begin augustus is Leuven het decor van het zevende IEEE Student Branch and Gold Congress. Dit tweejaarlijkse evenement brengt IEEE-studenten en onlangs afgestudeerden uit Afrika, het Midden-Oosten en Europa samen om hun kennis en ervaringen uit te wisselen. Deze keer staan er twee thema‘s centraal: hoe moeten we jongeren aantrekken tot het ingenieursberoep en hoe kunnen ingenieurs bijdragen aan het ontwikkelen van een innovatie-economie?
