The Hague-based Robin Radar Systems is collaborating with the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) to develop a new multi-mode radar capable of advanced image processing aboard large unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The platform is aimed at autonomously building detailed pictures in the air of activity on the ground and sea across large areas and in challenging operating conditions. This should ensure better intelligence for defense, security, emergency services and governments.

The new system incorporates multiple operational modes, including synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, inverse SAR (ISAR) and ground moving target indication (GMTI). This combination allows operators to detect, track and analyze activity across complex environments while maintaining long-range situational awareness. By performing all the signal processing onboard, the UAS doesn’t have to send the raw sensor data to the ground, allowing it to respond more quickly.
Within the collaboration, TNO is responsible for the R&D of the radar technology. Founded in 2010 as a spinoff of the research organization, Robin Radar focuses on the industrialization and commercialization.
