Dutch chip industry calls for government support to boost competitiveness
The fact that almost the entire semiconductor value chain is present in a small country like the Netherlands offers opportunities to increase competitiveness. To seize them, a helping hand from the government is needed, the industry argues.
The Dutch semiconductor sector is petitioning the government to co-invest 420 million euros to strengthen its competitive position. The national and sector-wide ChipNL consortium, consisting of 64 companies and knowledge organizations, recently presented a proposal to Minister of Economic Affairs Dirk Beljaarts. The scope of the seven-year program totals 735 million euros and promises to add roughly 5 billion euros in value to the Dutch economy.
Broadly speaking, the program aims to increase the innovative and value-creating capacity of the sector by promoting collaboration between different links in the value chain. It distinguishes between three pillars: chip design, chip packaging and semiconductor equipment, and identifies three common challenges: increasing productivity, latching on to the latest technological trends and improving sustainability.
