NLR and Photonfirst to deploy fiber‑optic sensing in helicopter fleet
The Royal Netherlands Aerospace Center (NLR) and Photonfirst unveiled a partnership to integrate real-time structural health and usage monitoring (SHUMS) into the NH90 military helicopter. The sensing system powered by Photonfirst’s photonic integrated circuits is scheduled for aerospace certification in July.

Photonfirst’s core technology is built around fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors embedded in optical fibers, which reflect specific light wavelengths. Changes in reflected wavelengths – caused by strain, temperature, pressure or vibration – are decoded by Photonfirst’s photonic chips into high-resolution, real-time data streams. NLR will integrate this data into predictive maintenance workflows, helping to prevent unplanned downtime, enhance safety and reduce repair costs across helicopter fleets
Photonfirst CEO Leendert‑Jan Nijstad called the collaboration “a benchmark in certified optical-sensing applications for global aerospace OEMs,” while NLR CEO Tineke van der Veen underscored the direct impact on aviation safety and operational readiness. Both parties intend to scale the SHUMS solution from military rotorcraft to civilian helicopters and other air platforms.
