Top Chinese semiconductor executives have called for a coordinated national effort to “build China’s ASML.” In a paper in the Science and Technology Review journal, leaders from principal semiconductor firms, including SMIC, YMTC and Naura, describe the current industry as “small, fragmented and weak,” with resources spread too thin (via SCMP). They urge authorities to pool financial and human capital under the five-year policy cycle. This plan has since been approved by the National People’s Congress, but doesn’t mention specific goals for the semiconductor industry, focusing on the broader metric of digital economy value-added.
