In office for almost a year, ASML CTO Marco Pieters speaks on his years in the trenches, the difficult reorganization he oversees and his company’s bet on 3D integration.
Marco Pieters had never heard about ASML until graduation was closing in and he had to start looking for his first job. Once on board, however, it didn’t take long for the young applied mathematician to grow a deep appreciation for the challenges in physics and engineering that the firm has to offer. Twenty-six years later, having worked across virtually every corner of ASML, he’s become ultimately responsible for tackling the company’s biggest technological hurdles.
CTO of ASML: It must be one of the most coveted positions among managerially inclined engineers in the Netherlands, if not the entire world. And yet, it’s not a job Pieters has always aspired to – or even dared dream about. The way he talks about it, he’s simply been enjoying various roles within the company over the years until he was offered the Big One. “And you don’t turn that one down,” Pieters says.
