Globalfoundries has unveiled FDX Fusion, an FD-SOI technology platform targeting AI in robots, cars, drones and industrial equipment. The company plans to double the density of its current 22nm FDX technology to deliver 7nm-class digital performance combined with analog, mixed-signal, embedded-memory and high-performance RF capabilities.

The announcement coincided with the topping-off of the company’s 1.1-billion-dollar fab expansion in Dresden, which will manufacture the FDX Fusion chips. Demonstrator silicon is slated for early 2027 and an initial process design kit for mid-2027. France’s CEA-Leti and Soitec are partners in the development of the platform.
Physical AI applications are often touted as a good match for Europe’s industrial strengths. Globalfoundries’ project is supported by the German federal government and the State of Saxony through the framework of the European Chips Act.
