The Eyrise smart glass factory in Veldhoven is for sale. Former owner Merck divested the facility to a trader in 2025, who is now auctioning it off. “Merck will no longer produce its own glazing end products previously manufactured under the Eyrise brand. However, Merck remains committed to supporting the dynamic glazing industry by continuing to supply active materials for liquid crystal glass applications to other LC glazing manufacturers,” the materials and life sciences group told Bits&Chips.

Eyrise traces its roots to Peer+, a spinoff from Eindhoven University of Technology that was acquired by Merck in 2014. As a supplier of LCD materials, the German firm saw an attractive opportunity in the Dutch dimmable liquid crystal windows. These windows consist of a thin layer of liquid crystal sandwiched between two panes of glass. By applying a small electric current, the orientation of the crystals can be changed, thereby increasing or decreasing light transmission.
Merck declined to provide details about the divestment.
