NYT: US to launch probe into Chinese mature semiconductor sector
The Biden administration is preparing an investigation into China’s build-up of capacity in the mature semiconductor business, according to a report by the New York Times. The inquiry could lead to tariffs or other trade restrictions, although a decision about that will fall to the next administration. Unlike previous interventions, which targeted more advanced chips and manufacturing equipment, the new probe is conducted based on concerns about “unjustifiable” or “unreasonable” behavior that harms US commerce interests, referring to purported dumping practices of Chinese chip firms. So far, semiconductor tariffs and export restrictions have been justified based on national security.
