Sensius’ RF collar focuses heat precisely on tumors in the head and neck, making them more susceptible to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Thanks to technological improvements and new clinical studies, this promising complementary treatment is now truly within reach.
Nearly half of the patients successfully treated for head or neck cancer get a recurring tumor. At that point, life expectancy is on average just eighteen months. Local heating of the tumor to high fever-like temperatures concurrent with chemotherapy and radiation has proven to be an effective treatment. However, the head and neck are difficult areas to heat. The body works hard to keep the many sensitive structures in that region at body temperature and the patient must keep still for quite some time during the heating process.
In 2017, Bits&Chips already reported on an RF system from Erasmus Medical Center and its spinoff Sensius that can meet this challenge in the head and neck area (link in Dutch). Last June, the Rotterdam-based company raised 15 million euros to bring the technology to the clinic. What has happened between 2017 and now?
